Established in 1998 by certified Iyengar Yoga teacher, Anastasia Yatras (member of the Iyengar Yoga Australia association) and based in the Illawarra region, Balance Point Yoga Wollongong specialises in offering Iyengar Yoga programs and workshops in the Illawarra region, retreats, outside the Illawarra region as well as Mentoring packages, for practitioners of all levels, online or in a studio setting.

Gentle/Over 55's Yoga Course

Level 1  Course

Let go of the hustle and bustle, with this early morning class, to round your week, on a positive note. Each week, explore a different focus, a different group of asanas to bring you into a state of poise and balance. A regular home practice is encouraged and supported at this level.  For students with 6 months plus experience.

Dates: 18 October to 6 Decemeber 2024

Duration: Eight week program

When: 7am to 8.30am. Doors open from 6.45am.

Where: The Foundery,132 Wentworth St, Port Kembla. Entry via the cafe.

Cost: $230 for the full program

Who is it for?: For students who are wishing to build their foundational knowledge and explore a greater range of Yoga asana including inverted poses, back bends and introduction to  advanced asana including arm balances. Students are introduced to the philosophy of Yoga at this level and are supported in developing a regular daily practice to consolidate what they learn in class.

Discover how Yoga develops more stability and flexibility through a slower paced class. Learn accessible ways to practice through the use of props and proven techniques, to create more strength as well as a greater range of movement.

Who is it for? This 5 week course is suitable for students with no prior experience, seniors, pregnant women, and for those looking to refresh their practice. Through the intelligent use of props and intentional sequencing of Yoga poses, students will discover tools and techniques to experience greater stability, mobility and strength, in order to enhance their quality of life. No requirement to be flexible or to have any prior exercise experience.

Yoga for Beginners Course

Have you been thinking about starting Yoga but wondered where to begin? 

This eight week course covers the basic techniques of Yoga and will instruct students how to modify poses to suit their body, so that they experience the benefits, for body, mind and psyche, from the first class. Students of all ages and backgrounds welcome!

Dates: 26 October to 14 December 2024

Duration: Eight week program

When:   10am to 11am            

Where: The Foundery,132 Wentworth St. Port Kembla

Cost: $210 for the full program

Mentoring

All levels - Mentoring Package

No matter what level you are in your Yoga journey, mentoring can help you to enhance your Yoga practice to suit your needs. Select from  a 3, 6, and 9 session package to focus on your health concerns which may not be adequately covered in a general class. Yoga Mentoring is suitable for anyone experiencing knee, hip, back, shoulder or neck pain, scoliosis, blood pressure issues, arthritis, diabetes or other autoimmune conditions. Pregnant women and menopausal stage women are also welcome to address concerns in depth in an intimate setting.

These mentoring packages are also available if you are a practitioner of yoga  looking to deepen your current practice. You may have attended numerous classes, workshops and retreats in the past only to find the well of your own personal practice inspiration run dry. The power of personal attention will give you the laser focus you need to undo unhelpful patterns in the body as well as improve skills in self observation, sequencing, techniques and use of props. Your teacher, Anastasia Yatras is an Industry expert, quality focused and takes a professional approach to safeguard students' health and wellness.

Her commitment to ongoing teacher training and development allows her to maintain a rigorous approach in the teaching of the Iyengar Yoga method whilst at the same time, her Greek heritage, brings a warmth and humour to her classes. Her dedicated daily yoga asana and pranayama practice infuses classes with personal and experientially based knowledge as well as objective information from classic Yoga texts.

I founded Balance Point Yoga Wollongong in 1998, then known as The Wollongong Yoga School, that same year I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Every year since then, I have offered classes, courses, workshops, retreats and mentoring, for beginners through to established practitioners.

Balance Point Yoga continues to offer you face to face classes, courses, workshops and retreats as well as online Mentoring packages to improve your Yoga practice, address back, hip, knee and neck restriction, as well as physical ailments created by sedentary living and the ageing process.

With over 30 years of practising exclusively in Iyengar Yoga and 23 years of teaching this extraordinary method, my commitment is to adapt Yoga's tools, for your unique physical, mental and spiritual evolution.

I discovered Yoga, when a dancer’s knee injury, led me to the Newtown Yoga room, Sydney, in 1992.  Astonished at the way this method healed my knee, I swiftly immersed myself in Iyengar Yoga, where, in 1998, I commenced teacher training at The Blue Mountains Yoga Studio. That same year, in November, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

I have been walking the twin paths of Yoga and life with a chronic disease, ever since These paths have interwoven to form the single core thread of my life’s journey.

My diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes in the same year I began Iyengar Teacher training, gave me the opportunity to test out and personally confirm the truth of BKS Iyengar’s words.

Terrified at the prospect of Diabetic complications, I made a vow to practise daily and to apply the guidelines Iyengar and his daughter Geeta gave for my condition. 

At a pivotal Medical workshop, run by Senior Iyengar teachers, Swati and Rajiv Chanchanni, during their Australian tour in 2002, I discovered that there was a specific physiologically based approach for managing Type 1 Diabetes. I had no idea, until then, that Iyengar Yoga offered specific adjustments, timings and sequences, to take my pancreas through a full range of movement, thus improving circulation to it.

These principles have protected my health ever since. As a result, I no longer relate to my pancreas as dis-eased, but rather, as living, intelligent tissue, that responds to the healing powers, a thoughtful practice provides. 

Diabetes gave me the reason to practise, diligently and wholeheartedly. However, once my condition stabilised, I evolved from doing Yoga to manage my condition, through to managing my condition, so I could keep practising Yoga!
